Wondering What You Can Do to Help Hurricane Victims?

Posted by Buy Smart Vents on

As you are probably aware, Hurricanes Harvey and Irma have been wreaking havoc here in the United States. Prior to this, the last major hurricane to make contact with land in the U.S. was Hurricane Wilma, all the way back in 2005. As our country continues to rebuild itself in the wake of this natural disaster, the team at Buy Smart Vents is here to help.

Our sister company, Niece Lumber, is posting updates over on Facebook to keep track of what has been collected so far and what the people of our community are doing to help. We have been truly amazed at all of the support of our customers, neighbors, and friends during such a difficult time and so many helpful items have been coming in. It is an incredibly touching thing to behold, seeing people come together to help those in need.

A Few Facts About the Hurricanes

According to weather.com, “Harvey's flooding has caused one of the worst weather disasters in U.S. history, with a price tag that will amount to billions of dollars.” Wikipedia notes that “in a four-day period, many areas received more than 40 inches (100 cm) of rain as the system meandered over eastern Texas and adjacent waters, causing catastrophic flooding” and that “The resulting floods inundated hundreds of thousands of homes, displaced more than 30,000 people, and prompted more than 17,000 rescues.”

Consider just how huge those numbers are for a moment. If you’re in an area of the country that wasn’t directly affected, it can be hard to comprehend! With so many people displaced from their homes because of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, it’s time to help the people who need it the most.

Let’s Band Together To Help

With so many communities in our country affected by these natural disasters, we wanted to provide those who interact with us online a bit of advice on how to help. Knowing exactly what to do and where to provide help can be a bit of a challenge. Because there are so many options and so many people want to help in the best way possible, making as much of an impact as they can, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed. Fortunately for you, we want to help point you to a few of the places that we have found that are doing good work.

Generally speaking, UNICEF is a great place to start when you’re considering where to donate your money. According to their website, “UNICEF has pre-positioned emergency supplies for dispatch, including drinking water, sanitation equipment, nonperishable food, medicines, tarps, blankets and emergency education kits” and your donations are helping to make that possible.

All Hands Volunteers is another wonderful charity that is going above and beyond to help those who have been affected by the hurricanes. If you’re looking for a way to help in a direct way from where you are, of course it’s also incredibly helpful if you can donate blood as there are many people who may need it. CNN notes that “the biggest need is for O positive and O negative.”

Know Your Charity

There are a number of other charities out there who are seeking to provide aid to people in need, but it can also be hard to know which ones you can trust. Fortunately for you, Charity Watch is doing the hard work of rating charities, allowing you to have a better understanding of what the charity you are considering supporting is actually going to be doing with the money that you provide.

The Federal Trade Commission has also outlined a list of precautions to take before making donations that can help you as you seek to make the right decision in where to send your money.
